A 1929 version by French filmmaker Jacques de Baroncelli was seen by Luis Buñuel in his formative years as a filmmaker. Recounted in flashback are the romantic perils of Mathieu, a middle-aged French sophisticate as he falls for his nineteen year-old former chambermaid Conchita.
